The 10 millionth Raspberry Pi has been sold! In just four years, the company has exceeded the wildest expectations.
The first draft of the future Raspberry Pi was presented in 2011, commercial production began in 2012. Very soon this microcomputer became the best-selling and most popular in the world. And today the developers of Raspberry Pi celebrated a new achievement – 10 million boards have been shipped.
Initially, the project was created as an educational project – Raspberry Pi is perfect for learning programming and electronics – everything is visible, accessible and the price is not great. Raspberry Pi Foundation even today constantly emphasizes the educational capabilities of the computer, offering a significant methodical section on the official website.
But the spread of Raspberry Pi has gone far beyond education. Many robotics and automation enthusiasts have taken a liking to the inexpensive ($25-35) credit card-sized computer, whose performance is enough, for example, to create a robot that recognizes video images based on OpenCV.
To celebrate the shipment of 10 million Raspberry Pi, the company decided to release a new Raspberry Pi Starter Kit. It includes a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B microcomputer, 8GB memory card with NOOBS operating system, microcomputer case, power supply, 1m HDMI cable, mouse and keyboard, and the book Adventures in Raspberry Pi. The cost of the novelty is 99 pounds sterling.
